Hundreds of people in Salem lined up this morning in an effort to protect their identity.
Today marked the Better Business Bureau's Secure Your Identity Day at the Salem Civic Center. It's a free way for local people and business to get ride of any unwanted papers and documents safely.
"this is an opportunity for you to get rid of all those personal papers, canceled checks and things that have been sitting in your house for a long time. Those are exactly what identity thieves look for," says Julie Wheeler with the BBB of Western Virginia. "So you can bring them here, we shred them on site and you don't have to worry about it. That's one less risk you have to your identity."
During the last event like this, more than 18,000 pounds of materials were shredded. If you missed today's event Wheeler says there's another one already planned for April.
