William Byrd High School principal to model for American Cancer Society

Posted: Updated:

The American Cancer Society is gearing up for the first ever Cure by Design event to fight cancer in style and organizers have asked survivors to serve as the models for the fundraiser.

Our first feature model is Dr. Richard Turner, the principal at William Byrd High School.

A little modeling inexperience didn't stop Dr. Turner from signing up to help out the American Cancer Society.

He's a six year colon cancer survivor and just wants to raise money to help others fighting the disease.

"I want to give back.   I want to do what I can to try to help alleviate the symptoms for other people that might have cancer and try to keep people from getting cancer," he explained.

Dr. Turner explains his diagnosis as a blessing, not what you would expect to hear, but he said he got involved with the school's Relay for Life and it formed a lasting connection with his students.

Tara Wheeler from our sister station Fox 21 27 and Lindsey Ward will co-emcee the event Friday October 25th at Hotel Roanoke.
