The first Willard Companies Octoberfest 5k was a success. The event raised about ten thousand dollars for the Smith Mountain Lake YMCA. Willard Companies has been instrumental in helping the Y with its fundraising efforts through this event and the support of the local business community.
The trail run through Booker T. Washington Park went off without a hitch despite the fact that the government shutdown had forced organizers to develop a back up location.
The ten thousand dollar amount will be matched by an anonymous donor and ends up having a twenty thousand dollar value toward reconciling debt from pledges that people were unable to pay during construction of the facility.

Sunken City Brewery was the finish line location and developed a special Sunktoberfest brew that coincided with the event.
So far the SML YMCA has raised about one hundred thirty thousand dollars toward its three hundred thousand dollar goal. The donor has now agreed to match the money raised dollar for dollar up to January 15th of 2014.
