Roanoke City Parks and Rec encourages greenway exploration

Posted: Updated:
ROANOKE, VA -

Roanoke City has started encouraging non-profits to explore other areas of the Roanoke Greenways for events.

Joe Hanning, Roanoke City Parks and Recreation. explains, "Everybody knows the most popular section of the greenway is the Roanoke River Greenway which includes Rivers Edge Sports Complex down to Wasena and the Vic Thomas Bridge."

Roanoke tracked the numbers and found in one year, two hundred twenty five thousand  people use the Roanoke River section of the greenway for running, cycling, and walking.

He says, "This is definitely the most stressed part of the greenway for us."

With so many non-profits utilizing the greenway for races the city has started encouraging groups to use to the Tinker Creek part of the greenway her near Fallon Park.

Roanoke now has a limit of 2 events per section each month.

Hanning says, "The bridge down from Fallon Park is five times the size of this bridge and it arcs over the river.  It is beautiful and actually connects with the Roanoke River Greenway.

Making connections is a focus for the future.  Hanning says within 5 years all of the paths will connect which will help strengthen the community through those non-profit events.

Hanning says, "We are generating money to help our own community and that is just another advantage of having a great greenway system here in Roanoke."
