Changes to SNAP payments begin November 1

Posted: Updated:

Beginning November 1, people in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as Food Stamps, will see a decrease in the amount of their monthly benefits.

According to the Commonwealth's Department of Social Services, most households will see about a 5.4% decrease in their SNAP payments.

The cut is because funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, also known as the Stimulus Package, are no longer available.

The decrease in the amount of benefits depends on many variables, including: income, household size and expenses.

The following is an estimate of the cuts people with no income will see based on household size:

  • Household of 1, $11 less
  • Household of 2, $20 less
  • Household of 3, $29 less
  • Household of 4, $36 less
  • Household of 5, $43 less
  • Household of 6, $52 less
  • Household of 7, $57 less
  • Household of 8, $65 less
