Kingsport Police looking into cold case involving a man who disappeared in 1995

Kingsport Police Detectives are seeking new information in a 1995 missing person case.

Police say James Daniel Butler was reported missing on August 13, 1995.  Butler’s girlfriend at the time told police she had last seen him a week earlier on August 7, 1995.  The girlfriend told police got on a bus bound for Johnson City in hopes of finding a job.

Butler was 39 years of age when he was reported missing, but would be 57 today. At the time of his disappearance, he was described as being a white male, 5’5” tall, weighed 165 pounds, with blue eyes and brown/partially graying hair. His last known address was 1000 Derwood Court, Apartment #2, in Kingsport.

Detectives say there was never indication of foul play, but family and friends told them Butler it was out of character for Butler not to be in touch.

Investigators say they’re hoping someone will come forward to help them renew the investigation.

Detectives say they would like to speak with any Butler’s relatives.   They particularly would like to talk with Butler’s sister Mary Lee Hicks, also known as Mary Lee Fletcher.
