ROANOKE, VA -

Susan G. Komen Blue Ridge gave out almost $320,000 last year to six different organizations that are helping uninsured and underinsured women get diagnostic and screening mammograms. One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer.

More than 80 Stop In Food Stores in Virginia and West Virginia are doing events like car washes, bake sales, and selling pink ribbons raising money for the organization this month.

"Cancer touches so many people that our folks just get behind it and want to do all they can to find a cure," said John Newton, the President of Stop In Food Stores. "This is just one way to let customers know we're trying to do something else besides profit off of them. We're trying to put money back in the community. It's great. My wife's a two-time cancer survivor so it's very special and it's very dear to a lot of people."

Last year, they raised $62,000 for Susan G. Komen Virginia Blue Ridge. This year, the goal was $70,000 but they have now raised the bar to $90,000.

"I met so many women who have said to me that they shouldn't be here today but the money we're providing is giving them that education and the ability to get that mammogram so they are here," said Catherine Turner, executive director of Susan G. Komen Blue Ridge.

Turner says 75% of the money raised stays in our area to help local men and women and 25% goes to national research.

"We also have Talbots who is doing a pink day. Chipotle did a fundraiser and Davis Heating and Air is giving a percentage of their proceeds. So I think it shows that these businesses are committed to the health of our community and helping us further our mission," said Turner.

On Wednesday, October 30, the Stop In Deli and Salad Bar on Starkey Road is donating half of all proceeds to the organization.
