11:00 p.m.

 A family is displaced after a fire caused an estimated $70,000 worth of damage to their home.

The Salem Fire Marshal's Office has ruled the fire accidental, having been caused by unattended cooking.

Police say a resident was home at the time of the fire, but that individual was able to escape without injury.

The Salem Fire & EMS Department responded to a structure fire in a duplex at 1720 Pomeroy Rd. this afternoon at approximately 2:19 p.m. The first units arrived within four minutes of receiving the call and found heavy fire and smoke coming from the building. Crews were able to contain the fire to the kitchen within 20 minutes of arrival, but the building did sustain significant fire and smoke damage.

Approximately 18 personnel from the Salem Fire & EMS Department (Engine 1, Engine 2, Engine 3, Tower 1, & Medic 802) responded to the call. Roanoke Fire & EMS Department Engine 4 provided staffing to cover additional calls.

The residents of the damaged unit and an adjacent duplex unit are being assisted with lodging by the American Red Cross.

 

4:08 p.m.

A Salem home caught fire around 3 p.m. on Monday. Fire crews in Salem rushed to the scene and were able to extinguish the blazes.

It happened on 1720 Pomeroy Road.

No one was injured during the fire. The fire marshals are on the scene investigating the cause and origin of the fire.
