Neighbors in Giles County discuss damage after Saturday shooting

Posted: Updated:
GILES COUNTY, VA -

People in Giles County are still looking for answers after a shooting involving police left one suspect dead Saturday evening.

"Everybody's pretty much saying what's going on," says Teresa Neice, who lives near the final shooting scene.

Police are answering that question with the release of new information about what led up to the emergency scene on Thomas Drive in Pearisburg.

They say it started about three miles away, on Fletchers Mountain Road, as they were investigating a robbery and shooing that happened on Friday.

Saturday afternoon police came across their main suspect, Jonathan Robertson. His truck was blocking the road, forcing police to stop. They say he started shooting at them and he fired back.

Neighbors showed us some of the damage. One man says he heard more than 15 gunshots. Bullets that left holes in the road, his garage, a special edition 2013 Mustang and a nearby fence.

Robertson was stopped by a spike strip as he tried to drive off, more gun shots and police say he took off again.

Officers say it all ended on Thomas Road when Robertson lost control of his vehicle, running off the road. They say he then got out of his vehicle, again shooting at police.

"I don't know how many rounds they fired," says Gary Fleshman, who lives less than 20-yards from where the shoot out ended. "There's one, two, three.. Probably 4 in the trailer. One hit a car over there and one went through the shop."

The scene is now much quieter as police continue to investigate.
