Clinton, McAuliffe rally in Blacksburg

Posted: Updated:
BLACKSBURG, VA -

As he enters the final week of his campaign, Terry McAuliffe's focus is on firing up his supporters and getting them to the polls.  And that's why he's bringing in some extra help.

"Ladies and gentlemen, the 42nd President of the United States of America Bill Clinton," McAuliffe announced as he introduced Clinton to a screaming crowd in Blacksburg Monday afternoon.

The former President stumped alongside his longtime friend and fundraiser in front of a few hundred people at Virginia Tech.  He called McAuliffe a "good person" and said a "deal maker", as McAuliffe has been referred to throughout the campaign, is exactly what Virginia and the country need more of.

"The decision that you will make in Virginia in eight days is profoundly important to you, to your future, and the future of this state," said Clinton.  "It's also important to America.  We have to send a signal that we have chosen creative cooperatism over constant conflict."

According to RealClearPolitics.com -- a website that tracks all scientific polls in key races -- the six most recent surveys show McAuliffe leading Republican Ken Cuccinelli anywhere from 7-17 points.

Both McAuliffe and Clinton noted that turnout is historically lower during off-year elections -- and they believe high turnout will spell victory for the Democratic ticket.

"If more than 40 percent of you show up eight days from now Terry McAuliffe will be the next Governor of Virginia," said Clinton.

But they say it's going to take more than a 45 minute rally to make that happen.

"Over the next week, the most important thing that we can ask of you is to make sure you are having face-to-face meetings with voters," McAuliffe told the crowd.  "Because the stakes are very high."

Clinton is scheduled to make several more appearances with McAuliffe this week, including an event in Downtown Roanoke on Wednesday afternoon.
