Veterans share their service stories through the Telling Project

Posted: Updated:
ROANOKE, VA -

Four local Virginia Western Community College students are sharing their military experiences during the Telling Project Roanoke.

"Nobody ever really understands if you don't go through it so it's just a little glimpse into the military life," said Michele Hilts the Virginia Western Community College Veterans certifying official.

"That they have a better appreciation for the sacrifices that these folks make. It's an all-volunteer military but it's still asking a lot to potentially sacrifice your life so that we can live the life we live," said James Atkins, an Army Veteran who is also sharing his story.

The performances are free but donations are encouraged to help Virginia Western start a new Veterans Assistance Fund to help student veterans during financial hardships.

"We're trying to make ourselves that much more veteran friendly because sometimes with processing time with the VA they may have delayed payments or something like that. We just want to give them that little bit of extra help," said Hilts.

The Telling Project is a creation of playwright Jonathan Wei, who first put on the performance in Eugene, Ore. Each version of the Telling Project begins with interviews with veterans and their families, followed by scripting, performance training and production. Wei's work has been staged nationally and his work has appeared in the Village Voice, the Iowa Review, and the North American Review. He has received support from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Smithsonian Institute, the Library of Congress, Metabolic Studios and others.
