New nursing home alternative opens today

ROANOKE, VA -

A new program starts this morning. It's an alternative to nursing homes and enables people to live at home and still get the care they need.

The Kissito PACE program is for people 55-years and older who meet some other requirements as well.

The Roanoke center will be open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and include daily activities and a nurse to monitor participants on an as-needed basis.

They will also be able to do physical therapy.

"It really diminishes those institutionalized walls and it wraps all the services around the participant and their caregiver in their home," said April Jones with Kissito PACE.

This is just the first center. They plan to expand, providing about 500 new jobs over the next few years.

The typical participant will visit two to three times a week, giving full time caregivers some time to themselves.

"It's just so much of a peace of mind to all of us because when you're not at home taking care of him, you're worried about him. My brother and I share responsibilities with him so this is going to be a great, huge relief of mine because were not going to be running to doctors every week. They take care of that up here," said Debbi Shockley, who takes care of her wheel chair bound father.
