DURHAM, N.C. -

With the temperatures dropping, a local group is helping to ensure that families in need can keep their children warm.

Welcome Baby Family Resource Center, based in Durham, helps pregnant women and their young children by providing baby clothes, formula, diapers and other necessities. This time of year, the group provides warm coats for families in need.

Now through Dec. 31, Welcome Baby is collecting new and gently used coats at eight drop-off locations throughout the city.

"We're looking for newborn-size up to 7 and 8 in kids," explained Patience Mukelabai, parent educator with Welcome Baby. "We're hoping to capitalize on the holiday spirit so people will give."

Last year, Welcome Baby collected more than 200 coats and 6,000 diapers during its coat drive.

Every week, Welcome Baby opens its doors for a Giving Closet, where moms pick up their necessities.
