The State of the Taubman Performance Art

Posted: Updated:

The Taubman Museum of Art in downtown Roanoke is at a pivotal time in it's history.  After some initial challenges resulting from, essentially weak interest from the public – the museum is re-inventing itself, trying to become, as we learned yesterday the Cultural focal point of Western Virginia, not just for art fans – but the kind of place people "at McDonalds" are talking about over Saturday morning coffee.

In the next few minutes you will see something incredible happen, as this young artist brings this image to life right before your eyes…

And here at the Taubman Museum of Art, they are going for "Incredible."  Even irresistible.

"We want to be a little edgy and risky.  We want to be relevant to the folks who come here.  And I also want our community to embrace us so the everyday person will carve out just a little bit of their week to come in many times during the year to see us," said Executive Director Della Watkins.

Like this painting that is taking shape, so too is that vision.

Live from the Taubman it's Thursday night.  In fact, Thursday Night Live is a weekly feature now.  This particular Thursday happens to be Halloween.

"We just want to be seen as a place in the community that's a fun place to go in addition to having a fabulous art collection," said Paige Kauffman.

Kauffman organizes the Taubman's events to have a hip twist.  The Gallery Crawl, and Art by Night.

While having respect for tradition and the way that things have been done I'm always looking and critically examining what can be done better.  Listening to the people that come and what they want to see." she said.

Like This performance art, from which you can not look away.  Performed by Morgan Donelson, a senior at Northside High School.

Briana Blanchard is the adult education coordinator.

"My job is to get adults into the building to experience the arts in new ways.  To get them to engage with in and participate in our creative community if you will," said Blanchard.
