Handed with the task of cleaning up storm drains and local streams and creeks through Blacksburg, the town task force has come up with a proposal on how to pay for the looming costs of new federal regulations.
Already the town pays more than a half million dollars a year for these costs and now they are expected to go up, meaning those who work and live here are going to have to chip in.
Blacksburg councilman John Bush says the proposal includes a flat utility fee. He explains to WSLS why that's the most affordable and reliable option for the town.
"it affects all properties that have impervious areas on their property including residential, commercial and non profits and two because it is a storm water utility fee...those money collected can only be used for storm water."
The proposal's fee would be a flat rate of six dollars a month per homeowner.
For all businesses including downtown and here on first and main the fee would be based on the amount of square footage of impervious surfaces like asphalt, roofs and sidewalks that cause water run off.
All commercial properties will be charged six dollars per 33 hundred square feet, possibly cheaper if the property has updated drainage systems.
"In the commercial properties, there is a chance that there could be a reduction of that fee of probably up to 40%, if they are newer properties, and built up to code," Bush said.
The proposal is still in the works and will be presented before the board by the first of next year.
