Mark Warner's advice to Terry McAuliffe

Posted: Updated:

Governor-Elect Terry McAuliffe is already beginning his transition into the Governor's Mansion in Richmond.

McAuliffe is in the process of reaching out to Republicans in the House of Delegates and the Senate to establish a working relationship.

We asked U.S. Senator and former governor Mark Warner what's ahead for McAuliffe and what he should keep in mind while in Richmond.

"Virginia's not just Northern Virginia, Richmond, and Hampton Roads," Warner said. "It's Southside, Southwest, Roanoke Valley and I hope that Terry will also take that message."

He added that Virginians don't particularly trust either party, so compromise is key.

We also asked Warner about the negotiations on the federal budget, and how confident he is a grand bargain can be reached.

"We keep postponing the inevitable and simply our debt goes up and when we do address the issues it will be harder, he said. "I would love to say we're going to get a grand bargain this time. I'll at least be happy with us not having another shutdown for a while."

Warner said compromising on the budget will do more for the economy than any other bill in Congress.
