Bedford police help save child from endangerment

Posted: Updated:

A Bedford mother is charged with felony child endangerment after Bedford Police says she put a cord around her child's neck.

Police say they received a picture of a one-year-old child with a rope around her neck.

They say the mother 27-year-old Charitye Tanner took the picture and sent it her boyfriend surrounding a custody battle.

Chief James Day commends Officer Kenneth Burdette for responding to the situation quickly and working with social services to remove the child from the home.

"You just can't really believe that someone would be that ignorant or that cruel," Chief Day says.

Chief Day says when Officer Burdette found the child the cord had already been removed, but it wouldn't have taken much movement for the child to have choked.

He says often child abuse cases are hard to convict and without that picture they would have no case.

"That's not something a few years ago that would have been available as a piece of evidence. For this case it helps us a lot," Chief Day says.

Chief Day says social media and technology constantly comes up in investigations now.
