Virginia State Police are trying to figure out what caused a crash that killed a Vinton man on Tuesday afternoon.
According to Sergeant Robert Carpentieri, of State Police's Salem division, the crash took place around 4:20 p.m. in Bedford County, on Route 755, about one-tenth of a mile north of the road's intersection with Route 650.
The investigating trooper's preliminary investigation found a 2010 Ford Focus driven by 70-year-old Joe Billy Bayless, of Vinton, was going north on Route 755. The car ran off the left side of the road, hit a mailbox, then a tree. The impact killed Bayless.
The trooper found Bayless was wearing his seatbelt.
The investigation is ongoing.
