He Said, She Said at the Movies: 12 Years a Slave

HE SAID:

"12 Years a Slave" is one of the most important movies to be released in the last 100 years. It tells the true story of Solomon Northrup, a free-born African American from Saratoga Springs, New York who was kidnapped and sold into slavery. He's finally reunited with his family after 12 years, moving to a number of plantations during that time. Steve McQueen is an artist. I think that word gets tossed around too freely these days, but he certainly fits the bill. The movie is honest, brutal, moving and is told with integrity for a little over 2 hours. Chiwetel Ejiofor is a gives a nomination-guaranteed performance in the lead role, as does Michael Fassbender as a slave owner, Edwin Epps, a man representing pure evil and the shameful nature of what was one of the darkest and humiliating chapters of American history, especially from a Caucasian standpoint. The film is rated R, and it's for a reason. The beatings and torture the African Americans go through are some of the most uncomfortable scenes I've watched in a theater, but it's absolutely necessary to the plot and a testament to McQueen's commitment to tell this story with unrelenting honesty. I fully recommend it, and it almost makes me want to change my prediction for Best Picture. It's now a solid two movie race, between "12 Years a Slave" and "Gravity", which both feature filmmakers at the helm with overwhelming creativity and purpose.

SHE SAID:

My review for this movie would be Full Price. I would say this movie is not for the faint of heart, they really hold nothing back when it comes to the violence. But while there were some pretty graphic scenes, it never felt forced or unrealistic to me. The film seemed to flow so smoothly. Something would come up and before you could realize or linger in emotions that the film brings up, you were slowly transitioning into the next scene. I thought this was a truly incredible film. I would definitely see it again and recommend anyone who was thinking about seeing it to see it was well.
