Gov. and first lady push pet adoption and puppy mill regulations

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

Animal adoption advocates, along with Gov. Pat McCrory and first lady Ann McCrory gathered Saturday with more furry friends than you could count.

The dog adoption event filled the front lawn of the executive mansion in Raleigh.

"Help these dogs get adopted, find a home," said McCrory.

Darci VanderSlik with the SPCA of Wake County said, "This is an amazing awareness opportunity for the SCPA to show that we do not have broken pets. These are amazing pets."

The event comes a week after WNCN reported on more than 90 animals being seized from a Raleigh animal rescue group president's home.

"We have hundreds, if not tens of thousands of homeless pets all over the community right now," said VanderSlik.

McCrory and his wife are also urging the General Assembly to pass a bill to better regulate puppy mills.

"This is an issue in our state that I think needs bigger attention," said Ann McCrory. "We are talking about basic standards for dogs, cats, shelters animals."

Many of the 30 or so animals at Saturday's event were recently rescued.

PetSmart and a number of other local pet stores held pet adoption events Saturday as well.
