Parent speaks out after losing child to abuse

Posted: Updated:

At 13-months-old Veralee Craft loved lady bugs. Now, her father Jonathan Craft has a lady bug tattoo with a halo on it to remember his little angel.

"I never thought something like this would happen to me," father Jonathan Craft says. "It hit me really hard and even today it still hurts."

Craft says there's nothing like the pain that comes from losing a child.

In July 2012, he rushed to the hospital to find that his daughter had been severely beaten and shaken. Her mother's new boyfriend, Preston King, is now in jail for charges related to the child's death.

"She had really swollen eyes. Her face was purple and she looked really bad," Craft says.

Craft is now putting all his efforts into raising awareness for child abuse. He hopes no other parent will have to suffer the same way he did. He's created t-shirts to honor his little girl.

"Immediately after this happened the hurt that I felt inside, I didn't want anyone to feel," Craft says.

The money from the shirts will go to CASA of Central Virginia. It's an organization that provides advocates for abused and neglected children to make sure their needs don't go unheard. He also plans to have an event to honor Veralee during April, for Child Abuse Prevention month.

Craft says his little girl is now helping another child. Her heart was donated to a 6-month old boy and helped him survive.

You can donate to CASA here.
