LYNCHBURG -

4:33 update: New details about events that lead to a Liberty University student being shot by campus police.  A search warrant says Joshua Hathaway approached a security officer at Annex II, and told the officer that he had been robbed and his car stolen. The officer began to investigate. Hathaway then pulled out a hammer and attacked the officer, who fought back. During the struggle, the officer managed to fire two shots, at least one of which struck and killed Hathaway.

Joshua Hathaway's car was found in the parking lot. Police continue to investigate. Roomates told police Hathaway had been acting strangely, and having academic and financial problems recently.

Police are searching Hathaway's property, looking for swipe cards and access cards, among other items.

2:52: Police have identified the student killed in a confrontation with campus police as Joshua Hathaway, 19, of Lubbock, Texas. The officer involved in the altercation was taken to the emergency room of Lynchburg General Hospital, where he was treated and released.

12:50: Police have the front lobby of Housing Annex II blocked off. Students are coming and going from the back entrance of the building. Erin Brookshier has spoken with students at that dorm and the nearby dorm. Students say the situation was scary and confusing. One student from Thailand says her family back home has already heard about the incident.

12:07 update: The officer was transported to Lynchburg General Hospital for treatment. The Lynchburg Police Department is investigating the incident and Liberty University is cooperating. [earlier reports say the student was taken to the hospital, when it was actually the officer].

11:36 update: Lynchburg Police have released a statement on the shooting death of a Liberty University Student. They responded to a call on Lankford Drive, at the Liberty University Housing Annex II at 4:07 a.m. This residence hall is female-only.

Lynchburg police's preliminary investigation shows that shots were fired by an LU Officer during "a physical altercation" with a male student at the Annex. That student is now dead. Police are not releasing his identity until they've contacted family members.

Lynchburg Police say this appears to be an isolated incident, and they aren't seeking any suspects in the case at this time.
