Creigh Deeds seemed destined for politics.

He was first elected to the House of delegates in 1991. A moderate democrat who defended gun rights, he easily won re-election five times before leaving the house to run for the seat of the late Senator Emily Couric.

Deeds won the seat and became a state senator in 2001, representing the 25th district, which includes Alleghany, Bath Highland, Nelson, Rockbridge, a part of Albemarle county as well as the cities of Buena Vista, Charlottesville, Covington and Lexington.

His political ambition grew with his popularity and in 2005 he became the democratic nominee for Virginia Attorney General. Deeds ran a strong race against Bob McDonnell but lost by only 323 votes.

The two would meet again in a race for governor in 2009. This time however, Deeds lost to McDonnell by 18-percent outspent, and according to pundits, the victim of being a Democrat during the rise of the conservative Tea Party.

Despite the loss, Deeds has retained his seat in the state Senate.

His personal life rose the level of news in 2010 when he and his first wife Pam divorced, according to the Washington Post because of the stress of 20 years of campaigning. Deeds re-married in June of 2012 to Siobhan Lomax of Lexington.

Deeds and his first wife had four children, Gus, Amanda, Susannah and Rebecca.
