He Said She Said at the Movies: "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire"

HE SAID:

"The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" is one of the best movies of the year, even though it won't be recognized as one. Don't get me wrong, it will stay around 90% on Rotten Tomatoes, but it's time we start to recognize fantasy novels/adventure epics as movies that can be on the same intellectual/artistic plane as dramas based in reality. Katniss Everdeen is an amazing protagonist, mostly because she doesn't want to be a hero or a martyr to anyone. She's been thrust into the spotlight; she doesn't ask to be there. However, she is a little bit of a hypocrite. She's always willing to do what's right for her district and her loves ones. It's this conflicting nature that makes her relatable. She has flaws, she contemplates good and evil, temptation etc. the way many of us do. Josh Hutcherson, who I wasn't crazy about in the first movie, really steps up his game here. And Phillip Seymour Hoffman almost steals the show as Plutarch Heavensbee.

This is the rare movie franchise that truly elevates its source material. The actors are a huge reason for this, but I must say I enjoyed Francis Lawrence's direction much more than Gary Ross. The shaky cam is pretty much gone and he allows the tension to build naturally instead of making sure we know a "big moment" is coming, because of a special camera move is happening. It's one of the best sequels ever made, and there are plenty of negative adjectives I could use for people who refuse to see this movie because of the hype or because they refuse to be swept up by a worldwide phenomenon. The reason people gravitate to this series is because the novels and films are honest. Suzanne Collins creates a future that is somewhat believable, but that's not the point here. The humanity, the questions that each character is forced to answer, we will all face in our lifetime (albeit on a much lesser scale). You can't always leave your true emotions on your sleeve. Sometimes we all must make the hard choice and keep our honest opinion to ourselves. The fate of the greater good and those around us may be at stake because of it. Full recommendation!

SHE SAID:

I'm going to be very honest-- I should probably not be allowed to write a review for anything dealing with the Hunger Games, because I am actually obsessed.  I saw the first move the night it came out, and have read all of the books as well-- and let me tell you, the new movie does not disappoint.  It was even better than I had imagined.  I know it was a longer movie, but it felt like it was over in about 30 minutes.

I think the creators of this movie were able to fully realize what they were working with.  As much as I loved the first movie, I felt this one was ten times more amazing.  The scenes were absolutely incredible.  Everything seemed so realistic, as bizarre as some of the things were, in the moment-- it felt so real.  I also think that the actual setup for the games had a lot more depth and detail as well.  It gave it something extra that the games in the first movie just didn't seem to have.

I haven't read Ryan's portion of the review (but from hearing him in the newsroom, I am 99.99999% sure he complains about Liam Hemsworth), and I will say, he is incorrect.  No, he does not have a lot of scenes-- but he is definitely not worthless.  I love him in the first movies, and I don't think he was terrible in this one.  It does make me sad, because in the books I wanted Katniss to be with him, but in the movies I am completely team Peeta.

Now that my rant about how much I am obsessed with the books and movies is over, I will say-- go see this movie.  You will not regret it.  It is seriously amazing.
