Catholic food pantry in Raleigh gives out record amounts

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

The Catholic Parish Outreach Food Pantry is giving out groceries at a rapid rate with the holiday season ahead.

The food pantry gave out a week's worth of groceries to a record 300 families on Monday, and expected another big day Tuesday. Bishop Michael Burbidge of the Diocese of Raleigh was at the food pantry Tuesday to help provide for the needy.

"People are hungry. There is hunger and poverty in our midst," Burbidge said. "Although we can't end the hunger throughout the world, we can do our part to alleviate any suffering."

Multiple volunteers helped Tuesday as many poured in for help and loaded groceries into their cars.

"It's sad that the numbers are so high, that the need is so great," Burbidge said.

But he said the generosity of "so many people" made it possible for the diocese to help a great many in need.
