Annual Bedford train layout opens Black Friday

BEDFORD, VA -

Every year people look forward to seeing the trains in Bedford.  The exhibit opens today and runs for the next two months.

"I get to play again. The only difference between men and boys is the price tag of their toys," said Nelson Wilmer, the Bedford Central Railroad president.

The price of these toys can run pretty high. Hundreds of dollars for some of the train engines that blow steam, make noise and run 'round and 'round this track.

Every year the club sets up a train layout at the Bedford Museum & Genealogical Library and it draws thousands of people.

"This is an amazing layout, this has got to be the best layout that bedford county has by far," said Jennifer Thomson, with the Bedford Museum & Genealogical Library. "It brings a lot of traffic to the museum, we still have people who have been here for 30 years and come to the museum and say 'I didn't even know you guys were here.' So with the train layout, it definitely brings people to our 80 year old museum."

"They'll stop in the doorway, their mouth drops open and it's like the kids looking at the Christmas tree on Christmas morning opening their presents. it makes it worthwhile for us older people to see that reaction," said Wilmer.

It's interactive with Thomas the Tank Engine and buttons to push that run the trains. New this year a smaller N-scale layout.

"We have certain families that come in every year and they will know every person that's on the layout, every detail, they notice the changes and I can't remember what we've changed but they know right away," said Wilmer. "What it means for me and all our members is a chance to give back to the community."

The train show is free but donations are welcome. They are also collecting new and gently loved stuffed animals for the Teddy Bear Brigade for Gleaning for the World.

You can see the trains through January 25th.
