Bookbag Santa gets a new sleigh

Posted: Updated:

Roanoke's Bookbag Santa won a new sleigh in a national Toyota car give away competition.

For years now, Gary Hunt has driven an old van around the valley to pick up donated supplies from schools and businesses.

He keeps all the pencils, pens and paper in storage until he flies most of it to Belize to hand it out to children in need and what's left is donated here locally.

Dependable transportation is vital to Hunt to collect everything.

“During a years’ time we have a lot of stuff.  We literally keep two tons of just good, usable stuff out of the landfill, so that's two tons after we sort out a ton of trash,” Hunt explained.

Hunt has asked for a new Sienna to replace his old van.

He'll get the new van in the coming weeks.
