Father opens up about guilty plea in his baby's murder

Posted: Updated:

Jonathan Craft surrounds himself with memories of his little girl 13-month-old Veralee Craft. Craft says the Roanoke man responsible for his daughter's death is where he's suppose to be and that's behind bars.

Preston King, 28, was in a relationship with Veralee's mother at the time. He's charged with beating and shaking Craft's daughter to death.

"The last year has been really difficult for me," Jonathan Craft says. "I've gone through times where I've been sad. I've gone through times where I've been angry. Holidays are the worst."

Craft says he can now close one chapter in this devastating part of his life because King has agreed to plead guilty to first degree murder charges. Under Virginia State Code, this means he will serve anywhere from 20 years to life in prison.

"I feel like there's a little bit of justice," Craft says. "Nothing that could ever happen could bring my little girl back, but I feel like we are on the right track."

Craft says since our WSLS broadcast first aired his 'Justice for Veralee Marie Craft' Facebook page has gone from 100 to 2,000 'LIKES.'

"Even though this has happened, there's a lot of people out there who do care and who are willing to support me and it makes a difference," Craft says.

Someone has even offered to help turn 'Justice for Veralee Marie Craft' into a non-profit organization. This way Craft's efforts can continue to help C.A.S.A of Central Virginia. It's an organization that provides advocates for abused and neglected children.

"I've had strangers offer me their help and anything I need they've offered their support," Craft says.

Support Craft says is crucial in honoring his little girl.
