RALEIGH, N.C. -

A new high-rise apartment building in downtown Raleigh promises to give young professionals what they want – a towering place to live in the heart of the city.

Raleigh mayor Nancy McFarlane joined developers Wednesday to break ground on a 23-story apartment building, called SkyHouse Raleigh, that will rise in downtown Raleigh.

McFarlane joined officials from Novare Group, Batson-Cook Development Company, and Edison Land LLC at 308 S. Blount Street for the ground-breaking.

The apartment building will have 320 units at the southwest corner of Martin and Blount streets. The complex will overlook Moore Square and City Market.

"The concept was, ‘We're going to build 320 great apartments and then on top of that build a house.. For everyone who lives there, we'll have a pool outside of the house,'" said Jim Borders, the president of Novare Group.

Novare completed the SkyHouse Midtown in Atlanta and has similar projects under way in Dallas, Houston, Austin and Orlando.

SkyHouse will have 5,400 square feet of retail in addition to the apartments, developers said. Apartments will be one, two and three bedrooms, with the signature "sky house" at the top.

The Downtown Raleigh Alliance said the building will be a good fit for young professionals.

"It really is responding to what people want," said David Diaz, president and CEO of the Downtown Raleigh Alliance.

"Generation Y folks really want to be part of the community and not in an isolated area."

The rise of SkyHouse will continue the boom in the downtown Raleigh housing market. Just this year, apartments have been built on North Boylan and St. Mary's, adding 395 units downtown.

Another 420 units are under construction.

But even with the growth, one important element is lacking.

"The one thing everyone keeps asking me about is a grocery store," McFarlane said. She hopes the rise of SkyHouse will make a grocery store feasible for downtown.

SkyHouse is expected to open to renters in a year.

Here are Raleigh's tallest buildings, by stories:

  • The PNC Plaza, 33 stories.
  • The Wells Fargo Capitol Center, 30 stories.
  • Two Hannover Square, 29 stories.
  • Red Hat building, 19 stories.
