DURHAM, N.C. -

A student at Riverside High School in Durham was arrested Wednesday after he was found to be in possession of a handgun on school property.

Steven Michael Carrera, 16, was arrested and charged with possession of a concealed weapon, possession of a handgun by a minor and possession of a weapon on educational property.

The Riverside school resource officer alerted deputies after receiving an anonymous tip that a student had a handgun with him at school.

Durham County Sheriff's deputies located Carrera and found him in possession of a loaded Leinad DD 45 pistol. The ninth grader refused to say why he had the weapon on him.

All students are safe and the campus is secure, the Durham County Sheriff's Office said.

Carrera is being held in the jail under a $100,000 bond.
