GLADE SPRING, VA (WJHL) -

The search for a man wanted in connection with assaulting a Washington County, VA deputy is over.

Sheriff Fred Newman told News Channel 11, Jason Simmons, 28, of Glade Springs, VA was arrested this morning around 9:00 a.m.

Simmons faces charges of assault on a police officer, resisting arrest and possession of narcotics.

Wednesday night a deputy stopped a vehicle for a violation – Simmons, the passenger, allegedly assaulted the deputy and fled the scene.

Simmons was also wanted in Wise County, VA for an outstanding arrest.

The driver of the vehicle, Jeffrey W. Eldreth, of Meadowview, VA, was charged with driving on a suspended license, no seatbelts, and defective exhaust pipe. Eldreth has since been released from jail.

The sheriff’s office says a K-9 unit and a VSP Med-Flight were used, but their search efforts were unsuccessful Wednesday night.

A manhunt was suspended for the night in Glade Spring, Virginia for a man accused of assaulting a Washington County Sheriff's Deputy.

Around 8 p.m., Deputy Steve McVey pulled a car over for a suspected automobile equipment violation in Glade Spring. The driver of the car had a suspended license, Washington County Virginia Sheriff Fred Newman said.  A passenger in the car identified as Jason Simmons, 28, Country Living Estates, Glade Spring is accused of shoving Deputy McVey down an embankment and then running into nearby woods.  

McVey wasn't seriously hurt.

Simmons was wanted for arrest by the Wise County, Virginia Sheriff's Office, said Newman.   He now faces charges in Washington County of assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest, and possession of narcotics.  Newman said officers found a meth pipe under the passenger's seat of the car.

The Washington County Sheriff's Office, Glade Spring Police, and canine units joined the search focused on the Route 91 bypass near Exit 29 off Interstate 81.  Virginia State Police provided assistance with a helicopter search crew.

The search was suspended around 10:30 p.m..  Sheriff Newman said crews will continue the search in the morning.
