Lynchburg body identified as Jamisha Gilbert

Posted: Updated:

3:50 p.m.

Lynchburg Police say they continue to investigate the case as an incident that involves a suspicious death.

They also so no information has been obtained that would lead investigators to believe that this case is in any way related to the missing person case involving Alexis Murphy.

Also, investigators say they haven't received any information that would lead them to believe the public is in any immediate danger.

Lynchburg Police say they will continue to provide updates as necessary.

11:52 a.m.

Lynchburg Police says the body discovered on Wednesday has been identified as Jamisha Gilbert.  They have no further information to release at this time.

7:00 a.m. Thursday:
We're waiting on word from the medical examiner's office in Roanoke this morning, after the body of an African-American woman was discovered during the search for 18-year-old Jamisha Gilbert.

10 p.m. Wednesday:

After a two day search for 18-year-old Jamisha Gilbert , police are now standing down after the discovery of body late Wednesday morning.

Lt. Dave Gearheart with the Lynchburg police spoke with WSLS about the investigation.

"During their search team members located a deceased black female at this time the area is being treated as a crime scene and is being thoroughly processed by the Lynchburg police department and the Virginia state police crime scene technicians."

The body has been sent to Roanoke for proper identification from a medical examiner.

While police aren't giving many details about the body, we know that it was discovered in a heavily wooded area less than two miles away from where Jamisha Gilbert's car was found on Winston Ridge Road in Lynchburg.

B.B. Shavers with the SHOPO group had met with Jamisha's mother the day before. He was in the process of making missing person flyers to hand out around town when he got the call from family that her body had been found.

"Anytime any life gets cut short, especially an honor roll student doing positive things inside a community...its a tragedy."

"She was a wonderful person she didn't bother anybody."

Next door neighbor and family friend Linda Herndon says the news has devastated the family and the community.

"If you are a mother its awful. her child is gone. She wants the answers. She wants to know what happened to her child. What went wrong?" Herndon said. "What kind of person would do something like that?"

Questions that investigators are still searching to answer as they move forward in a case that has changed from a missing person...to now what they are calling a crime investigation.
