RALEIGH, N.C. -

Raleigh Mayor Nancy McFarlane announced Thursday morning at a press conference that Billy Joel will be performing at PNC Arena on Feb. 9, 2014.

Joel last performed in Raleigh on March 3, 2007 at what was then known as the RBC Center as part of his 2007 world tour.

Carolina Hurricanes General Manager Jim Rutherford and PNC Arena Executive Vice President and General Manager Dave Olsen were also on hand for the announcement.

McFarlane tweeted out a picture of the PNC Arena stage with a large question mark over it and the text "Tomorrow I'm announcing an exciting concert coming to the PNC Arena next year! Who do you think it is?" on Wednesday afternoon.

The mayor's tweet used the #pncrumors hashtag which then began to trend on Twitter in Raleigh with people speculating who the performer or performers might be.
