SALISBURY, NC -

An NC newlywed who interrupted a break-in at his home just as he and his pregnant wife returned from a Thanksgiving trip died on Friday after being hospitalized since Dec. 2.

The victim, Marcus "Marco" Kauffman, age 25, suffered a gunshot wound to the back of his head in the broad daylight attack on Dec. 2 at his Rowan County home and was in critical condition in a Charlotte hospital until his condition worsened this week.

His family made the difficult decison to remove his life support on Friday morning.

"Marcus burst into heaven at 12:52 PM. Our loss is so painful, but we know this was gain for Marcus," his family wrote on a Facebook page that calls for prayers for him.

"Tears and grief are eased by the gentle hand of God, holding us, carrying us, wiping our tears. 'As for God, His way is perfect'. "

The fourth person was arrested a week ago after being on the run for 10 days.

Two teens and two men in their 20s are believed to be connected to a break-in into the home just as Kauffman and his wife, Maryann, were returning at 10 am last Monday after visiting family for several days during Thanksgiving.

Kauffman noticed a car that appeared to be broken down near his house and dropped his wife off at a neighbor's house while he went to help the motorist.

When he got near the car Kauffman realized that his house was being burglarized, several media sources reported. He was on the phone with 911 when shots broke out and was found in his car with a gunshot to the back of his head.

Kauffman, very active in his church and was scheduled to visit a prison to sing and pray with inmates the week of the shooting.

Last week, his wife said that there was some good news about Marco's condition.

"The CT scan they took yesterday looks good. He says the left side of Marcos brain still looks for the most part unharmed, and (the neurologist) seems very encouraged by the progress being made," Maryann Kauffman wrote on Facebook at the time.

Kauffman has folks from all over sending prayers. The Facebook page, which has updates on his condition, has 44,400 likes.

"There are so many reasons why Marco should not still be here, alive. What Satan meant for evil, God IS turning around for good," his wife wrote.

His wife and relatives were by his side as he spent his third full week in the hospital.

"We need your prayers now more than ever," relatives wrote after Marcus died Friday.

"For God's supporting hand to carry us through this valley of the shadow of death. For wisdom and grace. For continued forgiveness and peace. For the ability to rest in God's perfection.
To see through eternity's eyes."

The fourth person linked to the shooting, Tramel Devon Hart, 18, of Harmony, surrendered to police at 9:20 p.m. on Dec. 12, The Salisbury Police reported.

The newspaper also reported that  Khari Dewayne McClelland, 23, of Harmony, was arrested on Monday after the arrests of two other men earlier this month.

Jaylend Daquanne Turner, 19, of Statesville, has been charged with attempted murder, felony breaking and entering, felony larceny of a firearm and felony larceny. Turner is being held on a $3 million bond.

Michael Dwayne Teasley, 25, also of Statesville, was charged with accessory after the fact, a felony, and is being held on $500,000 bond.
