Mother pleas for more nursing staff in schools after daughters close call

The sweet face you see in the picture here is 6-year-old Isabella Facciani. She is a student at Cave Spring Elementary School. She was diagnosed with type one diabetes only a week ago.

Her mother Cheryl Facciani says the diagnosis is a nightmare.

"She was rushed to the hospital. Her blood sugar was well over 500. Our world came crashing down."

Addressing the roanoke county school board cheryl  says for her, outsourcing isn't about money. It's about potentially saving her daughters life.

She spoke to the board about diabetic complications.

"If your blood sugar gets too high you will die slowly and rather uncomfortably. If your blood sugar gets too low, you will die rather quickly."

Cheryl says type one diabetes is very complicated with a six year old.

She says Isabella's blood sugar can drastically spike or drop for no reason.   Only six years old, Isabella cannot yet recognize her symptoms.

Cheryl tells the board that already Isabella's blood sugar has dropped dangerously low at school .Without intervention she was headed toward hypoglycemia.

"The nurse was thankfully there on the premises, and she was able to intervene and do everything that was medically necessary. But as a mother, knowing that the school nurses are part time, and not there in the morning, and not there at the last 45 minutes of the school day, it really gives me great concern at what could happen."

It's that "what if" that Cheryl says she wants to eliminate  so she can put Isabella on the school bus every morning knowing that she will be safe.
