Washington County Criminal Court Judge Stacey Street found Dr. Robert Allen not guilty by reason of insanity this morning.

Dr. Allen entered criminal court on Friday morning facing charges stemming from his June 2013 arrest when Johnson City police said he led them on chase through town.

His charges included alleged possession of marijuana and possession of an illegal weapon, felony evading arrest, reckless driving and vandalism.

Based on medical evidence Allen's attorneys submitted, the court found Dr. Allen not guilty by reason of insanity.

A follow-up evaluation is required. The court will review the evaluation and determine if there's a need for further treatment.

"After that, the case will be over," said Allen's attorney, Gene Scott. "Assuming there's no need for further treatment, or no need for hospitalization, the case will be finished, and Dr. Allen can move on."

Dr. Allen says he is looking forward to putting his recent troubles behind him.

"I want to say this has been an absolute nightmare for me," he said. "I do not remember anything that happened during that time. I was undergoing a severe amount of personal stress."

He is considering practicing again. His attorney said his therapist cleared him to return to his practice part-time. He has decided not to, however, but may re-apply for his license in late 2014.

"I may or may not reapply for a license," Allen said. "I'm reaching the age where retirement is a possibility, but I love what I do."

His medical practice at the Oaks Castle will remain closed at this time.
