Construction continues on the Radford University campus

Posted: Updated:
RADFORD, VA - As fall classes wrap up for students at Radford University, construction crews are hard at work all across the campus.

Chief communications officer, Joe Carpenter, says crews have been working around the clock on the new $49.5 million center for the sciences.

"It's going to give our College for Science and Technology new classrooms, labs, a biology research lab, a planetarium and even a museum," says Carpenter.

When complete, the 114-thousand square foot building won't just be for Radford's teachers and students, leaders hope to use it as a tool to reach surrounding grade schools and the entire community.

"It'll be a nice home to where we can bring those students and teachers to our students and our faculty to collaborate," Carpenter says.

This project is just one part of a $300 million improvement plan that's been going on at Radford University since 2005.

It's a plan that Penelope Kyle put in place when she took over as the University President. Jack Brockway teaches astronomy at Radford, he says he's seen that plan unfold from the very beginning.

"President Kyle's first day on the job was my first day on the job," Brockway says. "I've gotten to see all of the changes she's been responsible for. Its nice to be part of a healthy growing community, doing new things every year."

Just last year the new college of business and economics was officially opened. Students returned in the fall to find a dining hall on campus renovated. And now, construction on the science center and a state-of-the-art fitness center is in full swing.

"We're catching up to where we need to be. It's a really exciting time. All the students are benefiting from this as well as the faculty. It'll position us for the future," says Carpenter.

A future that's being expanded through these new projects on the Radford University Campus.
