Updating Flu Facts

Here are some Flu Facts in Virginia from Carilion Clinic Infectious Disease Specialist, Dr. Thomas Kerkering

Q: Which form of the flu vaccine protects best? flu protection is best?

Dr. Kerkering: There are many different vaccines or different forms of the vaccines this year. They all cover the same strains of flu, so it just depends this year upon age and your otherwise underlying health status.

Q: If you catch the flu we wanted to know how long does it take for symptoms to show up?

Dr. Kerkering: Once you get exposed, you probably will see symptoms within 3 to 5 days.

Q: What is the biggest sign of flu?

Dr. Kerkering: For lack of a better way of putting it, you feel like you got hit by a truck. If there is a fever, that is a pretty good indication that you have the flu."

Q: When can we expect the biggest number of flu cases?

Dr. Kerkering: In Roanoke, the normal time for the most flu cases is around February. Last year, it was at the end of December. We have had two cases this year, so I think we are on track to see it in January or February.

Doctor Kerkering says our best defense is to keep our hands washed.
