Appalachian Power files to upgrade Botetourt Co.-Rockbridge lines

Posted: Updated:

ROANOKE, Va. (AP) - Appalachian Power is seeking state approval to upgrade a 36-mile section of transmission line in Botetourt and Rockbridge counties.

The company plans to replace all of the 500-kilovolt Cloverdale-Lexington line's wires. About 12 towers will be replaced or added.

Appalachian Power says it filed an application for the $36 million project on Thursday with the Virginia State Corporation Commission.

The section to be upgraded is Appalachian Power's portion of the line. The company shares the line with Dominion Virginia Power.

The company says the improvements are needed to ensure adequate and reliable electric service.

All of the work will be done within the existing 175-foot transmission right of way.

If approved, the project would be completed in June 2016.
