Stonewall Jackson House Announces Winter Schedule

Posted: Updated:
The Stonewall Jackson House in Lexington has announced its winter schedule for 2014.

The house and museum shop will close at 3 p.m. Dec. 31 and remain closed during January and February, except for three special days, marking Lexington’s Lee-Jackson celebration and Jackson’s birthday, in January.

For the Lee-Jackson celebration, the house will be open for tours on the hour and half-hour on the afternoons of Friday, Jan. 17, and Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014.  For the house museum’s annual celebration of Stonewall Jackson’s birthday, the house will be open Tuesday, Jan. 21, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The house may also be opened by request for group tours of 10 or more with reservations scheduled at least 72 hours in advance.

The site will resume its regular schedule of operation, open seven days a week, on Saturday, March 1, 2014.

The museum first adopted a seasonal schedule in 2010. “Closing during the season of lightest visitation gives us a chance to do some interior maintenance that is difficult to accomplish when the site is open for tours,” said Michael Anne Lynn, site director. “It also enables the small staff and corps of volunteers to plan and conduct training before the busy tourist season.”

New volunteer orientation begins on Feb. 6, 2014.

The Stonewall Jackson House is one of three museums operated by the Virginia Military Institute, where Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson taught before the Civil War. For more information, visit the website at
