Bedford County head-on crash kills Huddleston woman

BEDFORD COUNTY, VA -

Virginia State Police say the driver of a car died in a head-on crash with a tractor trailer on Thursday evening.

According to Sergeant Robert Carpentieri, of State Police's Salem division, the crash took place around 6:00 p.m. on Route 43 in Bedford County, about one-tenth of a mile south of Route 43's intersection with Route 707.

The investigating trooper found 33-year-old Wendy Sue Rector, of Huddleston, was driving a 2002 Volkswagen Jetta north on Route 43, when she drive into a curve, crossed over the center line, and hit a southbound 2000 Peterbilt flatbed tractor-trailer, driven by 42-year-old Robert Towler, of Gretna.

The impact killed Rector, and the investigating trooper is not sure if she wore a seatbelt.

EMTs airlifted a passenger from the Volkswagen, 19-year-old Kristen Reynolds, from Huddleston, to Roanoke Memorial Hospital. She had been wearing a seatbelt. State Police did not release Reynolds' condition.

No charges were announced Thursday night, and the investigation is ongoing.
