Police step up enforcement, DUI checkpoints

Posted: Updated:
ROANOKE, VA - Local police are cracking down to keep drivers safe this holiday season.

With holiday parties, a big weekend for celebrations and New Year's Eve right around the corner, Roanoke City Police Sgt. Will Drake, says police are going to be stepping up enforcement throughout the new year.

He says extra officers will be called in, there will also be extra DUI checkpoints-- one of which will be taking place tonight.

"You don't have to get arrested for drunk driving," says Sgt. Drake. "If you drive while you're impaired, we have enough people out that we're going to find you. But it's preventable, they don't have to do it. They can get a ride or figure out what they're going to do."

He's encouraging anyone with plans to go out or drink, to form a plan to get home safely.
