On Friday, local church groups, organizations and community leaders gathered to remember those who are sometimes forgotten. Dozens gathered at Green Memorial United Methodist Church in Roanoke to read the names of homeless people who died this past year.
Organizers said the goal is to recognize those without a permanent place to call home and raise awareness about the issue of homelessness.
"A lot of the people may have died and were just buried in the public cemetery" said Carol Tuning, Roanoke Human Services Administrator."We don't want them to be unknown any longer. We want to recognize them and celebrate their lives."
Tuning said Oakey's funeral service and other organizations have helped bury the homeless.
