Curve conundrum: Rocky Mount working to fix section of Franklin Street

ROCKY MOUNT, VA - Wrapping around the new Harvester Performance Center, leaders in Rocky Mount say a curve along Franklin Street has been a problem spot.

"People would cut that corner," said Matt Hankins, Assistant Town Manager for the Town of Rocky Mount.  "That's a real traffic hazard -- people cutting through what basically amounts to a private parking area."

As they get ready to celebrate the opening of the new performance center, they decided to expand the sidewalk -- making it so drivers can no longer cut that corner.  But that's created some new issues.

"The primary problem is with the truck traffic," said Hankins.

Large trucks and tractor-trailers now have to make a wider, more difficult turn to get through the curve.  Folks we spoke to in the area say the trucks typically end up in the opposite lane as they navigate the curve and have come close to hitting cars parked along the side of the road. 

Hankins says the town understands those concerns and is currently working on a fix.

"So there will be a few months of inconvenience as folks get used to a new traffic pattern and realize they can't cut the corner quite as sharply as they're used to doing," said Hankins.

Hankins says the plan is to repave that stretch of Franklin Street, then realign the lanes so trucks have more room to navigate through the curve.

"Tractor-trailers will have a greater turn radius than they've had even before the sidewalk was changed," said Hankins.

Because asphalt plants are closed for the season, they won't be able to repave the road until March or April.  In the meantime, the town is asking drivers for their patience and to drive safely.
