Rescue Mission hoping to receive 2,000 cookies for Christmas

Posted: Updated:
ROANOKE, VA - With Christmas just a few days away, the Roanoke Rescue Mission is making sure everything is ready for their big holiday meal.

Last year they served more than 950 meals on Christmas Day, and they're expecting similar numbers this year. This weekend, the mission started collecting cookie donations. They're hoping to collect at least 2,000 cookies before Wednesday's big feast.

"One of the best things, especially for families with small children, is to bake some cookies and let your little ones bring them to the mission," says Joy Sylvester-Johnson. "Then they can see the mission, and on Monday at noon they can bring their cookies and take a tour of the mission, meeting some of the people who will be enjoying their cookies later."

Cookies will be accepted through Christmas Eve, each day a volunteer will be at the front desk to accept them from 7 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Four years ago, Bedford Ride lost its federal funding, which accounted for 50 percent of the operating budget. Then the state funding dried up as well. But since then, the program has found new resources through grants, donations and a greater commitment from Bedford County and the Town of Bedford.
