Donations are down for southwest Virginia groups

Posted: Updated:

A WSLS 10 follow up now on charitable donations for our area.

You still have time to give to your favorite charity to get the tax benefits before the 2014 calendar year starts.

Some of the groups we talked to say donations are down this year.

The Salvation Army says the Red Kettle campaign is down about $30,000 this year.

The Red Cross says it's down about 30-percent for the year. They give out about $450,000 to clients in our region annually.

The United Way says there is a trend of fewer people giving but just today they've had $20,000 dollars donated.

"I always say the Roanoke Valley's the most generous people in the world living right here but this year, we've had more challenges than usual, probably less donors than usual," said Frank Rogan, the United Way of Roanoke Valley President and CEO.

These organizations say one gift came make all the difference.
