8-year-old airlifted after being bit by family pit bull

BLUFF CITY, TN (WJHL) - An eight-year old is in stable condition after being attacked by the family dog.

Sullivan County deputies told News Channel 11 it happened just before midnight Monday night at a home of Ryder Church Road in Bluff City.

Deputies said the girl was on the couch with her mom when their pit bull attacked her.  Officers told News Channel 11 this attack was "unexpected" according to the family. The police report states the dog has been acting strange, "as if someone was outside".

The girl was airlifted to Johnson City Medical Center. The police report states the girl suffered a wound that was 8-9 inches long and a half inch deep. Thankfully, she is expected to be okay.

The family's neighbor, of several years, said she's very surprised by the attack.

"He was just a big old baby. He's all bark, you know, which is good for keeping people away, but like I said he was real friendly," said Susan Jones.

Blountville Animal Control picked up the pit and it's now in a ten-day quarantine. After ten days the family will be notified. If they do not pick up the dog, it will be put down. The family told police the dog is up-to-date on its shots.

Deputies said no charges are being filed.

Department of Children's Services is being called in, but police said that is standard.
