RALEIGH, N.C. -

The first baby born in the new year at Rex Hospital in Raleigh came via caesarean section shortly after the clock struck 12.

Weighing 6 pounds 11 ounces, Ezekiel Russell Brown was born to Keiferland Brown at 12:10 a.m.

"I feel like he's lucky and I can't wait to see what other stuff he's going to do when he gets older," Keiferland said. "He's really lucky to be the first one. They were saying there's a lot of competition, so I'm really just ready to see him grow up to see what he's going to be."

Keiferland said she hoped baby Ezekiel would be born on Dec. 31 because her birthday is Dec. 1 and she wanted her family to represent the first and last of the month. But after 9 hours in labor that began at 2 p.m. on New Year's Eve, doctors decided to perform a c-section.

Ezekiel, who is Keiferland's only child, was due Dec. 28.
