A Roanoke man is behind bars after police capture him from the scene of an assault.

Paul Anthony Burger, age 46 is charged with forcible rape, forcible sodomy, arson, and obstruction of justice.

The assault happened on January 4th at 11:00 p.m.

Roanoke City Police officials say they received a suspicious call to the 1000 block of Campbell Avenue S.W.

When they arrived on scene officers say they could hear a woman screaming for help inside of the apartment complex.

The residence was locked so officers forced their way inside and found an unclothed woman who rushed to the officers for help.

The victim had been raped and assaulted.

At that time, Burger had locked himself inside of a room in the residence and was threatening to harm himself and the officers.

Officers then released a non-lethal chemical agent into the room; however burger still refused to come out.

Agitated, Burger intentionally set the bed on fire while locked inside. Officers then forced entry into the room and extinguished the blaze.

Officer Paul Delp, Officer Paul Maddy, Officer Tim Donathan, and Officer Daniel Spradling worked together to get Burger to safety.

Officer Spradling noticed Burger did not have a pulse and delivered chest compressions until Burger started breathing.

Burger was transported by Roanoke Fire EMS to Carillion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Currently Burger is being held in the Roanoke City Jail.
