Few problems reported as Wake Co. schools deal with cold

RALEIGH, N.C. -

Although there were a few bus problems and two schools in Raleigh experienced temporary heating problems, Wake County public schools fared pretty well in dealing with the cold Tuesday.

Wake County will operate on a normal schedule Wednesday.

The heat wasn't off at Harris Creek Elementary and Hilburn Academy long enough to send any students home from school. And it never got icy cold in the building because WCPSS said it had taken precautions the night before.

Usually schools turn off the heat at night, but Monday night they left it running to keep the buildings from going into deep freeze.

So when the kids arrived at 10 a.m., there was residual warmth in the building until they got the heat working again around noon.

Of the system's 950 plus buses, WCPSS said only 20 were affected by the cold – four had dead batteries and the other 16 were troubled by various mechanical issues. Substitute busses were used or instant repairs made so that no pickups were missed.

"Our mechanics were prepared," spokeswoman Renee McCoy said. "So at those district offices where we had a dead battery, we had a replacement battery to set in- so it should not have caused that much of a delay."

Now with wind chills backing off, school officials say start times Wednesday will be normal.
